Skylark Meadow, Broad Blunsdon, Swindon is a development of new build houses by Newland Homes, a housebuilder which has worked in partnership with Viridian Solar since May 2020. A mixture of contemporary family houses comprising of three, four and five bedroom properties was built, including some affordable and shared equity properties.

The development was built on a brownfield site originally owned by Thames Water which used it as a storage facility and comprised of sustainable homes with Clearline fusion roof integrated solar PV installed by Avonside Group. Homes were also wired with provision for an electric car charging point and pre-installed fibre broadband to support home working.

Chris Parker, Marketing Manager at Newland Homes said:

" As a company we decided in 2019 that we needed to respond to the climate emergency and began to look at what measures we could include that would make a difference. Over several developments, we added solar PV arrays to our detached homes, this included Skylark Meadow, Blunsdon. We also trialled air source heat pumps on particular developments (not Blunsdon) and took much product insight and research as we moved through designing our next developments. By the end of 2020, we found that by jettisoning gas boilers, upping the insulation levels in the fabric of the build, introducing further solar PV and air source heat pumps, we could achieve a home that creates as much prime energy as it needs, thus making it a zero carbon rated home, which is the type of property that's now in production on the majority of our current sites, with up to another 500 zero carbon homes planned in the pipeline "
