Viridian Solar is to sponsor the UK team in the World Solar Challenge, a biennial race across Australia for vehicles powered with on-board solar cells.
Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) is a team of students from the Department of Engineering with its sight set on the 2015 race. The team hopes that its innovative design combining an aerodynamically optimised shape with a sun tracking solar mounting can deliver a podium finish.
The race runs from Darwin on Australia's north coast to Adelaide in the south, a distance of 3,000km. The winning entry in 2013 completed the distance in 33 hours, an average speed of 91km/h (57 mph).
Viridian Solar and CUER will be displaying the vehicle at Ecobuild 2015 in March.
